A well-timed popup can collect newsletter sign-ups, promote a sale or offer help. A badly timed one makes visitors leave. This guide shows how to build a popup in WordPress with Elementor Pro's Popup Builder, and how to set triggers and rules so it helps rather than annoys.

Step 1: Create the popup

  1. Go to Templates > Popups and click Add New.
  2. Name it (for example "Newsletter popup") and pick a template or start blank.
  3. In the popup settings, choose width, position (center, bottom bar, slide-in), overlay and the close button style.

Step 2: Design it

  • One message: a short headline with a clear benefit ("Get the free WordPress launch checklist").
  • One action: a single button or a short form with just an email field.
  • An obvious close option: a visible X and "No thanks" text.
  • Mobile check: preview on mobile; small slide-ins or bottom bars often work better than full-screen boxes.

Step 3: Publish settings: conditions, triggers and rules

Click Publish and Elementor asks for three things:

Conditions (where)

Choose the pages: the entire site, blog posts only, a specific page, or exclude pages like checkout and contact.

Triggers (when)

  • After scrolling 50-70% of the page: the visitor is engaged.
  • After a delay of 20-30 seconds.
  • On click: opens when someone clicks a button, ideal for "Get the checklist" links.
  • On page exit intent: see our exit-intent popup guide.

Advanced rules (who and how often)

Show it once per session or once every few days, hide it from logged-in users, and stop showing it after someone signs up.

Step 4: Connect the form

Use the Elementor Pro Form widget inside the popup and set Actions After Submit, such as email, a Mailchimp or other email marketing integration, or a webhook. Test it yourself. For list-building ideas see how to add a newsletter signup form.

  • Do not cover the main content the moment a mobile visitor arrives.
  • Make closing easy on small screens.
  • Never place ads inside popups or make the close button hard to find.
  • Keep it lightweight: avoid huge background images.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Elementor Pro for popups?

Yes, the Popup Builder is an Elementor Pro feature. Free alternatives include dedicated popup plugins with a free tier.

Do popups hurt SEO?

Popups that cover the main content as soon as a mobile visitor arrives can hurt the experience and search performance. Delayed, scroll-based or exit-intent popups that are easy to close are much safer.

How often should a popup appear?

Show it once per visitor or once every few days, and never again to people who closed it or signed up. Elementor's advanced rules control this.

Can I show a popup only on certain pages?

Yes. Display conditions let you choose the entire site, specific pages, posts in a category or individual URLs.
