You click "Update now", the spinner turns for a moment, and then WordPress tells you the update failed. Or worse, Elementor Pro never shows an update at all while the free plugin keeps moving forward. Because Elementor Pro powers the header, footer and templates of so many sites, a stuck update is stressful. Fortunately, almost every Elementor Pro update error comes down to one of a handful of causes.

Work through these fixes in order. Each step either solves the problem or rules out a cause, and none of them puts your designs at risk.

Before anything else: take a backup

Create a full backup of your files and database, or a snapshot from your hosting panel. Updates rarely break sites, but when you are already troubleshooting, a restore point removes all the pressure.

Fix 1: Check that your licence is active and connected

This is the cause in most cases. Unlike free plugins, Elementor Pro receives its updates through your licence, not from WordPress.org. If WordPress cannot verify the licence, it never sees the new version.

  1. In WordPress, go to Elementor > License.
  2. Confirm it says the licence is active for this website.
  3. If not, click Disconnect, then Connect & Activate and log in to your Elementor account.
  4. In your Elementor account, confirm the subscription has not expired and your plan has a free website activation.
Note: Changing the site address, such as moving from a staging domain to the live domain or switching from http to https, can make Elementor see your site as a new website. Reconnecting the licence after a move fixes this.

Fix 2: Update the free Elementor plugin first

Elementor Pro is an add-on that sits on top of the free Elementor plugin, and each Pro release requires a minimum free version. If the free plugin is behind, the Pro update may fail or show a "requires Elementor version X" message. Update Elementor first, then try Elementor Pro again.

Fix 3: Force WordPress to check again

WordPress caches update information for several hours. Go to Dashboard > Updates and click Check again. If you use a caching plugin or server-level cache, clear it as well, then reload the Plugins page.

Fix 4: Check disk space and file permissions

Errors such as "Could not create directory", "Could not copy file" or "Installation failed" mean WordPress could not write the new files to your server.

  • Check your hosting dashboard for free disk space. Old backups stored inside the hosting account often fill it up.
  • WordPress needs permission to write inside wp-content/plugins. Folders are normally set to 755 and files to 644. Your host's support team can check and fix permissions in a few minutes.

Fix 5: Check your PHP and WordPress versions

New Elementor releases drop support for very old PHP and WordPress versions. Compare your site with Elementor's current requirements:

  • In your hosting panel, check the PHP version and switch to a current supported release.
  • In WordPress, update the core software if it is behind.
  • Under Elementor > System Info you can see your versions and server limits in one place.

Fix 6: Temporarily allow the update through security tools

Security plugins and firewalls sometimes block the outgoing request WordPress makes to download the update. Pause the firewall or security plugin, run the update, then switch protection back on straight away. If that works, add Elementor's update address to the plugin's allowed list or ask your host to whitelist it.

Fix 7: Update manually from your Elementor account

If automatic updates still fail, a manual update almost always works and keeps all your designs:

  1. Log in to your account on the official Elementor website and download the latest Elementor Pro .zip file. Do not unzip it.
  2. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin > Upload Plugin.
  3. Choose the zip file and click Install Now.
  4. WordPress notices the plugin is already installed. Click Replace current with uploaded.

If you get "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive", increase the PHP upload limit in your hosting panel and try again.

Fix 8: Rule out plugin conflicts

If the update installs but the site shows errors afterwards, another plugin may be clashing with the new version. On a staging copy, deactivate all plugins except Elementor and Elementor Pro, confirm the site works, then reactivate the others one by one until the problem returns. Many hosts offer one-click staging, so you never have to test on the live site.

Fix 9: Regenerate CSS and clear every cache

If the update succeeded but layouts look broken, spacing is wrong or fonts have changed, Elementor's generated CSS files are probably stale.

  1. Go to Elementor > Tools > General and click Regenerate Files & Data (called "Regenerate CSS & Data" in older versions).
  2. Clear your caching plugin, server cache and any CDN cache.
  3. Open the site in a private browser window to check.

Common error messages and what they mean

  • "Download failed" or "Package could not be installed": licence not connected or expired. Start with Fix 1.
  • "Requires Elementor version X": the free plugin is outdated. See Fix 2.
  • "Could not create directory": disk space or permissions. See Fix 4.
  • "There has been a critical error on this website" after updating: usually old PHP or a plugin conflict. See Fixes 5 and 8, and check the email WordPress sends to the admin address, which includes a recovery mode link.

When to contact Elementor support

If none of the fixes work, open a ticket with Elementor support from your account. Include the exact error message and your System Info report (Elementor > System Info > Copy & Paste Info). Clear information gets you a much faster answer, and it is included in your subscription.

Avoid "free update" shortcuts

You may find downloads or helper plugins that promise to unlock Elementor Pro updates without a licence. Avoid them. Unofficial copies are unsupported, receive no security fixes and are a common way malware ends up on WordPress sites. A licensed copy updated through your Elementor account is the only safe route for a business website.

Preventing update problems

  • Keep the licence renewed so updates keep flowing.
  • Update regularly instead of skipping many versions at once.
  • Test major updates on staging for business-critical sites.
  • Keep automatic backups running.

Frequently asked questions

Will updating Elementor Pro delete my designs?

No. Your pages, templates and settings are stored in the WordPress database, not in the plugin files. Updating, or even replacing the plugin files manually, keeps your designs. Still, always take a backup first in case something else goes wrong.

Why does Elementor Pro say my license is inactive?

Usually the subscription has expired, the site URL has changed (for example from http to https or from a staging domain), or your plan has no free website activations left. Check your Elementor account, then disconnect and reconnect the licence inside WordPress.

Should I update the free Elementor or Elementor Pro first?

Update the free Elementor plugin first, because each Pro version requires a minimum version of the free plugin. Then update Elementor Pro, and clear all caches afterwards.

Why don't I see an update for Elementor Pro at all?

Pro updates are delivered through your connected licence, not WordPress.org. If the licence is not connected or has expired, WordPress never sees the new version. Reconnect it and click Check again on the Updates screen.

Is it safe to use a plugin or download that unlocks Elementor Pro updates for free?

No. Unofficial copies and licence workarounds are not supported, receive no security fixes and are a common source of malware. Keep Elementor Pro licensed and update it through your Elementor account.
