Rank Math is one of the most popular free SEO plugins for WordPress. It handles page titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, schema markup and redirects in one place. This guide walks through installing Rank Math, the setup wizard choices that matter, and how to optimize posts without chasing a perfect score.

Step 1: Install Rank Math

  1. Go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search Rank Math SEO, then install and activate it.
  2. Deactivate any other SEO plugin first. Two SEO plugins create duplicate tags.
  3. Start the setup wizard. You can connect a free Rank Math account or continue in the advanced mode options it offers.

Step 2: The setup wizard

  • Import: if you used Yoast or another SEO plugin, import its settings.
  • Your site: choose the site type (personal blog, business, online shop) and add your logo and default social image.
  • Search Console: connect your Google account to see search data inside WordPress (optional but useful).
  • Sitemap: keep the sitemap enabled and include posts and pages.
  • SEO tweaks: noindex empty category and tag archives, and open external links in a new tab if you prefer.

Step 3: Titles and meta defaults

Go to Rank Math > Titles & Meta. Set sensible defaults such as %title% %sep% %sitename% for posts and pages. For thin archives you do not want in Google (date archives, author archives on single-author blogs), set them to noindex.

Step 4: Optimize each post

  1. In the editor, open the Rank Math panel and enter one focus keyword: the main phrase people search.
  2. Write a unique SEO title (about 50-60 characters) and meta description (about 120-160 characters) with a reason to click.
  3. Use the keyword naturally in the first paragraph, one subheading and the URL slug.
  4. Add internal links to related posts and alt text to images.
Tip: do not stuff keywords to turn the score green. Write for the reader first; a 70-80 score on a genuinely helpful page beats 100 on a forced one.

Step 5: Schema, breadcrumbs and sitemap

Common mistakes

  • Running two SEO plugins at once.
  • Using the same focus keyword on many posts.
  • Leaving "Discourage search engines" ticked (see site not showing on Google).
  • Expecting the plugin alone to bring traffic. Content and links do the heavy lifting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rank Math free?

Yes, Rank Math has a capable free version covering titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, schema and redirections. Paid plans add advanced features such as more schema types and keyword tracking.

Can I use Rank Math and Yoast together?

No. Use only one SEO plugin. Running two creates duplicate meta tags and sitemaps. Rank Math can import settings from Yoast when you switch.

Does a green Rank Math score mean I will rank?

No. The score checks on-page basics. Rankings depend on how well your content answers the search, your site's authority and competition. Treat the score as a checklist, not a goal.

Where is the Rank Math sitemap?

By default at yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml once the Sitemap module is enabled. Submit that URL in Google Search Console.
