How to Fix a Slow WordPress Admin Dashboard

The public site loads quickly, but the dashboard takes ten seconds per click. A slow wordpress admin wastes hours every week. Caching doesn't help here, because the admin is never cached. Here is how to find and fix the real cause.
Step 1: Update PHP
Old PHP versions are much slower. In hPanel, open Advanced > PHP Configuration and select the newest PHP version your plugins support (8.2 or higher). Check the site afterwards.
Step 2: Find heavy plugins with Query Monitor
- Install the free Query Monitor plugin.
- Load a slow admin page and open Query Monitor from the admin bar.
- Check Queries by Component and Slow Queries to see which plugin is responsible.
- Replace or remove the worst offender. Deactivate Query Monitor when finished.
Common culprits: page builders' add-on packs, statistics plugins storing data in your database, broken link checkers, and security plugins scanning constantly.
Step 3: Limit the Heartbeat API
The Heartbeat API sends requests every 15 to 60 seconds while the admin is open. A speed plugin (or Heartbeat Control) can reduce the frequency in the dashboard to 60 seconds or more. Keep it enabled in the post editor for autosave.
Step 4: Clean the database
- Delete old post revisions and limit future ones by adding
define( 'WP_POST_REVISIONS', 10 );to wp-config.php. - Clear expired transients and spam comments.
- Remove leftover tables from deleted plugins carefully, after a backup.
Step 5: Raise PHP memory
Low memory limits slow heavy admin pages. Add define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' ); to wp-config.php (see the attached snippets and fixing memory errors).
Step 6: Reduce dashboard widgets
Use Screen Options at the top of the dashboard to hide widgets that load external news feeds.
Step 7: Check your hosting
If everything is clean and it's still slow, your plan may lack resources. Look at hPanel's resource usage for CPU limits being hit.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my admin slow but the front end fast?
Caching speeds up the public site, but the admin is never cached. Heavy plugins, many database queries, low PHP memory and the Heartbeat API affect the admin directly.
Is it safe to disable Heartbeat?
Limiting it is safe; fully disabling it stops autosave and post-lock warnings. Reduce the frequency in the admin rather than turning it off in the editor.
How do I know which plugin is slow?
Use Query Monitor to see slow queries and which plugin caused them, or deactivate plugins one by one on a staging site.
Will upgrading hosting fix it?
Sometimes. If you've cleaned plugins and updated PHP and the admin is still slow, the server may be underpowered for your site.
