Unique, helpful product descriptions are one of the best investments a store can make. They help shoppers decide, reduce "not as described" returns and give search engines original content instead of the same supplier text found on hundreds of other stores. The problem is time: writing 300 good descriptions by hand takes weeks.
Writing product descriptions with AI can cut that to days. This is the workflow I use for Shopify and WooCommerce clients, built around one rule: the AI never invents a fact.
Step 1: Build a product fact sheet
Create a spreadsheet with one row per product and columns for everything a buyer needs to know:
- Product name and type
- Materials and finish
- Dimensions and weight
- Colors, sizes or other variants
- What is included in the box
- Care or usage instructions
- Who it is for and typical occasions or uses
- Any certifications you can document
This sheet becomes your single source of truth. If a fact is not in the sheet, it does not go into the description.
Step 2: Define your brand voice once
Write three or four sentences describing how your brand speaks, such as "friendly and practical, short sentences, no hype, speaks to busy parents". Add one existing description you love as an example. You will paste both into every prompt, which keeps hundreds of descriptions consistent.
Step 3: Use a structured prompt
You write product descriptions for [brand], a [short description] brand. Voice: [3 sentences about tone]. Example of our style: [paste one description]. Using ONLY the facts below, write: 1) a 2-sentence opening focused on the main benefit, 2) 4-6 bullet points of key features and specifications, 3) a one-line care or usage note. Under 120 words. Do not invent any materials, measurements, certifications or claims. Facts: [paste one row from the sheet]
The explicit "do not invent" line and the fixed structure are what make the output reliable and easy to review.
Step 4: Include search-friendly wording naturally
Use the words shoppers actually search, such as "cotton kurta for women" or "stainless steel water bottle 1 liter", in the product title and the first sentence where they read naturally. Do not repeat keywords unnaturally; one clear, natural mention is better than five forced ones. For the wider strategy, see our Shopify SEO guide.
Step 5: Edit every description
- Check each fact against the sheet.
- Remove exaggerated claims such as "best in the world" or "guaranteed results".
- Make sure similar products have clearly different descriptions that explain how they differ.
- Read it on a phone: is it easy to scan?
- Keep a list of banned phrases ("elevate your style", "must-have", "game-changer") and add it to your prompt when they creep in.
Important: health, safety, legal and certification claims need special care. If you are not sure a claim is true and allowed for your product category, leave it out.
Step 6: Work in batches
For large catalogs, paste 10 to 20 rows at once and ask for descriptions in the same format, numbered to match the rows. Review each batch before moving to the next. Batching keeps quality high and makes patterns, such as a repeated phrase, easy to spot and fix in the prompt.
Step 7: Import at scale
Once descriptions are approved, add them to your product spreadsheet. On Shopify they go into the Description column of the product CSV, which accepts simple HTML for paragraphs and bullet lists. Our Shopify CSV import guide explains the full process, and WooCommerce has a similar built-in product CSV importer.
A before-and-after example
Before: "Steel bottle 1L. Best quality. Buy now."
After: "Cold water at your desk all afternoon, without the plastic. This 1-liter double-wall stainless steel bottle fits most car cup holders and has a leak-proof screw cap." Followed by bullets for capacity, materials, weight, what it keeps cold or hot for (only if you have tested it) and cleaning instructions.
The second version shows the buyer the everyday benefit and answers practical questions, using only facts from the sheet.
What to focus on by product type
- Fashion: fit, fabric feel, occasions, styling ideas and size guidance.
- Electronics: specifications, compatibility, what is in the box and warranty.
- Home decor: size in the room, materials, mood and care.
- Beauty: ingredients, how to use and skin types, with no medical claims.
- Food: taste, ingredients, allergens, storage and shelf life. Accuracy is essential.
Measure whether it worked
Track the add-to-cart rate, conversion rate and return reasons for products before and after rewriting. Fewer "not as described" returns and more add-to-carts are strong signs your descriptions are clearer. Combine better descriptions with the other fixes in our product page optimization guide for the biggest lift.

Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to use AI for product descriptions?
Yes, as long as every fact comes from your own product data and a person reviews the result. AI is a writing assistant here; you remain responsible for accuracy, claims and tone.
Will AI descriptions hurt my store's SEO?
Not if they are accurate, genuinely helpful and different from product to product. Problems come from near-identical, unedited descriptions across many similar products, or from copying supplier text, whether written by AI or not.
How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer a buyer's questions: often a two-sentence opening plus five or six bullet points for simple products, and more detail for technical or expensive items. Structure matters more than word count.
How do I keep AI descriptions consistent across the catalog?
Reuse the same voice description, the same example description and the same output format in every prompt, and keep a list of banned phrases. Process products in batches and review each batch before continuing.
Can AI write descriptions from a product photo?
Some AI tools can describe images, which helps with visual details like color or style. Never rely on a photo for facts such as materials, dimensions or certifications; those must come from your verified product data.
