Most stores treat the product page as an afterthought: a supplier photo, a copied description and a price. Yet this is the page where buying decisions are made. Small, focused improvements here usually lift sales more than a new app, a redesign or more ad spend, because they make every visitor you already have more likely to buy.

These are the 15 Shopify product page optimization fixes I make first on client stores, grouped by what they do. Download the audit checklist at the end and score one product page at a time.

Photos and media

1. Show every useful angle

Front, back, side, a close-up of the material or detail, and the product in use. Shoppers cannot pick the item up, so your photos must answer the questions their hands would.

2. Show scale

Include at least one photo that shows real size: on a model, in a hand, on a desk or next to a familiar object. "Smaller than I expected" is one of the most common reasons for returns.

3. Keep images consistent

Use the same aspect ratio and background across the catalog. Consistency looks professional and stops the layout from jumping when shoppers switch between products or variants.

4. Add a short video where it helps

A ten-second clip showing fit, texture, size or how something works can answer more questions than a paragraph. Keep videos short and compressed so the page stays fast.

Words that sell

5. Write a title that says what it is

Include the product type and the key attribute: "Linen Button-Down Shirt, Relaxed Fit" is clearer, and better for search, than "The Riviera".

6. Lead with benefits, then details

Open with what the product does for the customer, then list the specifications. "Keeps drinks cold for 24 hours" persuades; "double-wall vacuum insulation" explains. Include both.

7. Make it scannable

Use short paragraphs, bullet points and clear sections such as Size & fit, Materials and Care. Many shoppers scan rather than read.

8. Write original descriptions

Supplier text appears on dozens of other stores. Original descriptions help customers and search engines. For large catalogs, see how to write product descriptions with AI safely.

Price, delivery and trust

9. Put delivery and returns next to the button

A single line such as "Delivered in 3-5 days · Free returns within 7 days" directly under the add-to-cart button answers two of the biggest objections at the exact moment of decision.

10. Never hide costs

Surprise shipping costs at checkout are a top reason for abandoned carts. Show the shipping cost or free-shipping threshold on the product page.

11. Show genuine reviews

Real reviews, especially with customer photos, build trust fast. Ask for them after delivery. Never write fake reviews; they damage trust and can break consumer-protection laws and platform rules.

12. Make contact easy

A visible chat, WhatsApp or email link reassures first-time buyers that a real business stands behind the store, and it lets them ask the one question that stops them buying.

Layout and usability

13. Design for thumbs

On phones, the variant selectors and the add-to-cart button must be large and easy to reach. A sticky add-to-cart bar can help on long pages. Avoid pop-ups that cover the page as soon as it loads.

14. Make variant choices obvious

Use color swatches and size buttons instead of dropdowns where your theme allows, link a size guide, and show clearly which variants are out of stock. Offer an alternative or a "notify me" option rather than a dead end.

15. Keep it fast

Compress images, remove apps you no longer use and avoid stacking several apps that each add scripts to the product page. A slow page quietly loses buyers, especially on mobile data.

A product page layout that works

  1. Title, price and a one-line benefit.
  2. Image gallery with zoom, plus a short video if useful.
  3. Variant selectors and quantity.
  4. Add-to-cart button with delivery and returns information directly below.
  5. Short description with key benefits.
  6. Expandable sections: size and fit, materials, care, shipping.
  7. Genuine reviews.
  8. Related products or "complete the look".

This order answers questions in the sequence shoppers ask them: What is it? Does it look good? Will it fit me? How fast will I get it? Can I trust this store?

Tip: in the Shopify theme editor, open the product template and rearrange sections to match this order. Many themes let you add a "text with icon" or "collapsible content" block for delivery and returns without any app. New to the editor? See how to customize a Shopify theme.

Mistakes that quietly lose sales

  • Only one product photo.
  • Variant names such as "Option 1" or "Default".
  • Walls of text with no headings or bullets.
  • Fake urgency: countdown timers that reset and invented stock counters.
  • Out-of-stock products with no alternatives.
  • Pop-ups and chat bubbles covering the add-to-cart button on mobile.

How to measure improvement

In Shopify analytics, watch the add-to-cart rate and the overall conversion rate. Make one major change at a time, wait two or three weeks, then compare with a similar period. Remember that promotions, seasons and traffic sources also move the numbers, so look for consistent trends rather than single days.

More visitors make every improvement worth more. Bring in search traffic with our Shopify SEO guide, and check the launch checklist if your store is new.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important part of a Shopify product page?

The photos, closely followed by clear delivery and returns information near the add-to-cart button. Shoppers cannot touch the product, so images and reassurance answer their biggest questions.

Should I use apps to improve product pages?

Use apps only for features your theme cannot provide, such as photo reviews or advanced bundles. Many modern themes include swatches, size charts and sticky add-to-cart bars, and every extra app adds scripts that can slow the page.

How long should a Shopify product description be?

Long enough to answer every question a buyer has, and no longer. Simple products may need 100-200 words; technical or expensive products often need more, organized with headings and bullet points so it stays easy to scan.

How do I know if my changes are working?

Watch the add-to-cart rate and conversion rate in Shopify analytics for a few weeks after each change, and compare similar periods. Change one major thing at a time so you know which change made the difference.

Are countdown timers and stock counters good for conversions?

Only when they are genuine. Fake urgency, such as timers that reset or invented low-stock numbers, damages trust and can break consumer-protection rules and advertising policies.
