How to Change Your WordPress Theme Without Losing Content or SEO

On this page
A new theme can make your site faster and more modern. The good news is that your posts, pages and media stay safe when you switch. What can disappear are widgets, menus, theme-specific features and code you added to the old theme. Here is how to change your WordPress theme without losing anything that matters.
Step 1: Back up everything
Take a full backup of files and database before you start (see how to back up WordPress for free).
Step 2: Make a note of what the old theme does
- Widgets and sidebars: screenshot Appearance > Widgets.
- Menus: note which menu is in which location.
- Customizer settings: colors, fonts, header and footer text.
- Custom code: anything added to the theme's
functions.php,header.phpor Additional CSS, especially tracking codes. - Theme shortcodes: buttons or sliders inserted with theme shortcodes stop working after the switch.
- Speed and SEO baseline: run PageSpeed Insights on key pages and note your titles.
Step 3: Test on a staging site
Install and activate the new theme on a staging copy first (see how to set up a staging site). Click through the homepage, posts, contact form, checkout and mobile view. For a quick look only, use Live Preview on the Themes screen.
Step 4: Move your custom code safely
Tracking codes and snippets in the old theme's files are lost when you switch. Move them to a header-and-footer code plugin (see adding Analytics and AdSense code safely) or a child theme so future theme changes cannot remove them.
Step 5: Switch on the live site
- Choose a quiet time of day.
- Go to Appearance > Themes and activate the new theme.
- Reassign menu locations in Appearance > Menus (or the site editor).
- Re-add widgets and redo key customizer settings.
- Clear all caches.
Step 6: Check SEO and speed
- Titles and meta descriptions still come from your SEO plugin, so they should be unchanged.
- Check each template has one H1 heading.
- Re-run PageSpeed Insights and compare with your baseline.
- Watch Google Search Console for errors over the next two weeks.
Tip: keep the old theme installed but inactive for a week, in case you need to switch back quickly. Then delete it.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my posts and pages if I change my theme?
No. Posts, pages, media and users are stored in the database and stay in place. What can change is how they look and anything that was built into the old theme itself.
What can be lost when switching themes?
Theme-specific widgets and sidebars, menu locations, customizer settings, shortcodes provided by the theme, and any code added to the old theme's functions.php or header.
Does changing theme affect SEO?
It can, if headings, page speed, schema or tracking codes change. Test the new theme on staging, keep your SEO plugin, and check titles and speed before going live.
Can I preview a theme before activating it?
Yes. Use Live Preview on the Themes screen for a quick look, or a staging site for a full test with your real content and plugins.
