How to Add a Blog Section to Your WordPress Website (Separate from the Homepage)

On this page
Many business websites launch with just a homepage, services and contact page. Adding a blog lets you answer the questions customers search for on Google and turn those readers into enquiries. This guide shows how to add a blog section to WordPress without losing your custom homepage.
Step 1: Create two pages
- Go to Pages > Add New Page and create a page called Home (if you do not already have one).
- Create another page called Blog and leave it empty. WordPress fills it automatically with your posts.
Step 2: Set the homepage and posts page
- Go to Settings > Reading.
- Choose A static page.
- Set Homepage to "Home" and Posts page to "Blog".
- Choose how many posts show per page (10 is a sensible default) and save.
Your blog now lives at yourdomain.com/blog.
Step 3: Add the blog to your menu
Go to Appearance > Menus (or the site editor's Navigation block), add the Blog page and save. Keep the menu short; "Blog" or "Guides" near the end of the menu is common.
Step 4: Organise with categories
- Create a few broad categories under Posts > Categories that match your services or topics.
- Rename "Uncategorized" to something useful.
- Give each category a short description; many themes show it on the category page, which helps it rank.
- Use tags sparingly, or not at all.
Step 5: Design the blog layout
- Theme options: most themes let you choose a grid or list layout, featured image size and excerpt length.
- Elementor Pro: design a custom archive and single post template (see how to create a blog post template).
- Add a table of contents to long posts (see adding a table of contents).
Step 6: Publish posts that bring visitors
- Answer real customer questions, one topic per post.
- Link each post to the relevant service page and related posts.
- Use an SEO plugin for titles and descriptions (see setting up Rank Math).
- Add a featured image with descriptive alt text.
Tip: one genuinely helpful post a week beats ten thin posts a month. Consistency and quality build traffic over time.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my homepage show blog posts?
WordPress shows your latest posts on the homepage by default. Go to Settings > Reading and choose 'A static page' to set a custom homepage and a separate posts page.
Can I put the blog at yourdomain.com/blog?
Yes. Create a page with the slug 'blog' and select it as the Posts page in Settings > Reading. Your post URLs follow your permalink settings.
How many categories should a blog have?
Start with a few broad categories that match your services or topics, usually three to seven. Too many thin categories create weak archive pages.
Does a blog really help a business website rank?
Yes, when posts genuinely answer questions your customers search for and link to your service pages. Thin, generic posts do little.
