Everyone hits a broken link sometimes. A generic "Not Found" page makes visitors leave; a helpful custom 404 page guides them to what they wanted. Here is how to build one in WordPress, and how to reduce 404s in the first place.
What a good 404 page includes
- A friendly message: "Sorry, we couldn't find that page."
- A search box.
- Links to popular pages, categories or your best guides.
- Your normal header and footer so visitors can navigate.
- A contact link to report the broken link.
Method 1: Block themes (Site Editor)
Go to Appearance > Editor > Templates and open the Page: 404 template. Edit the text, add a Search block and a list of links, then save.
Method 2: Classic themes
Many themes offer 404 options in the customizer. To edit the template file itself, use a child theme and edit 404.php there, never in the parent theme.
Method 3: Elementor Pro
- Go to Templates > Theme Builder and add a Single 404 template (shown as "404 Page").
- Design it with a heading, Search widget, buttons and a posts grid of popular articles.
- Publish; Elementor applies it automatically to 404 errors.
Keep the correct status code
Your custom page must still return a 404 status. Do not use plugins that redirect every missing URL to the homepage; Google treats that as a "soft 404" and it confuses visitors.
Find and fix the broken links
- Check Indexing > Pages > Not found (404) in Google Search Console.
- Use a 404 log, such as the one in the free SWS Site Fixer plugin (download below), to see the URLs visitors actually hit.
- Redirect valuable old URLs to the right pages with 301 redirects (see fixing 404 errors with redirects).

Frequently asked questions
Should a 404 page redirect to the homepage?
No. Keep the 404 status so search engines know the page does not exist, and show a helpful page with search and links instead of automatically redirecting.
Does a custom 404 page help SEO?
It mostly helps visitors, which reduces lost traffic. For SEO, the important part is redirecting valuable broken URLs to the right pages.
How do I find which URLs cause 404 errors?
Check Google Search Console's Pages report and use a 404 log plugin, which records the broken URLs visitors actually hit.
Can I design the 404 page with Elementor?
Yes, with Elementor Pro's Theme Builder you can create a 404 template. With free Elementor, use your theme's 404 settings or the site editor.
